Cognosante is proud to partner with the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide work experience to service members who will soon separate from military service. Through the DoDās SkillBridge program, service members in the last 180 days of their military careers are connected to industry partners for training, internships, and other civilian work experiences.
As a 5 Star Employer, designated by the prestigious VETS Indexes 2024, we proudly welcome employees who have served to bring unique skills and shared values to their work and to Cognosante. We spoke with our newest Fellow, Ayanna Francis, to learn more about her journey from Navy engineer to civilian data analyst.
Tell us about your military career and service to the nation.
I enlisted in the Navy in 2015 as a gas turbine systems technician (electrical type). My original role was to maintain the systems that powered my ship. Over time, my responsibilities grew, and I eventually became involved in building the systems for new ships.
What led you to explore the field of data analytics?
During my first deployment, I pursued several trainings and certifications during down-times, including one in data analytics.
I started using data analytics to manage the preventive maintenance on our ships ā tracking parts, maintenance schedules, and whether the work was getting done on time. Eventually, I started using Power BI to manage maintenance across multiple ships.
In my last assignment, I identified a data inconsistency affecting accuracy of the information we used to manage our operation, and I worked with our leadership to fix it. That experience of working outside my scope and finding a problem and fixing it was transformative. After I got a master’s degree in data science, my transition to the field of data analytics was complete.
"It is very reassuring to know that, in joining Cognosante as a SkillBridge Fellow, Iām doing something right, but Iām not doing it alone. Thereās someone walking the path with me every step of the way."
What drew you to the SkillBridge program, and to Cognosante in particular?
As I started to consider life after the Navy, I began looking at STEM-based programs. A friend encouraged me to look at SkillBridge, and it had the best opportunities for me to transition from the world of engineering to the world of data. Cognosante, for example, had a position on its Data Science team that would allow me to build on the skills I acquired in the Navy. It was the perfect fit.
What has your experience been like at Cognosante?
Everyone has been incredibly helpful. There is so much to learn, but the team works with me to prioritize the skills that are most important. I donāt have to do it all at once! It is very reassuring to know that, in joining Cognosante as a SkillBridge Fellow, Iām doing something right, but Iām not doing it alone. Thereās someone walking the path with me every step of the way.
Do you have any advice youād like to give separating service members, or Veterans seeking civilian work?
Donāt be afraid to ask questions. Transition to civilian life is scary, but there are people to ask for help. Take the risk!
