Veteran Viewpoint: What does Veterans Day mean to you?

We met with Sergio Cortes, Marketplace Service Desk Supervisor and former 25Q – MULTICHANNEL TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS OPERATOR-MAINTAINER to learn more about his military experience and how it translates to the role he fulfills today on the Marketplace Service Desk project in support of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

        1. Can you tell us what does Veterans Day means to you?

To me, Veterans Day has several meanings. It signifies a day where we pay respect to those who never returned home to their loved ones—to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we all can enjoy the privilege of freedom. It also marks a day to reminisce with my brothers and sisters in service the hardships we had to endure and serves as a reminder that we will be there for one another no matter the circumstance.

        2. Do you recall the day your service ended? What did you do in the days/weeks afterward? Did you work or go back to school?

While serving in the National Guard, I was also a full-time employee with Cognosante. My last day of service was on October 2, 2012.

        3. Do you have any advice for Veterans transitioning into civilian life?

Utilize all available resources that are out there to help you transition into a civilian job and but most importantly, don’t forget to keep the lines of communication open with those you served with for additional assistance—you never know, the Officer you may have served with could be a recruiter for the next position you want to take on.

        4. Can you elaborate on a skill learned in the military that translates to your current role?

Leadership – This skill helps me influence others to accomplish needed tasks by providing clear guidance and direction; this includes not giving my staff tasks I, myself, wouldn’t be willing to complete.
